Pink Eye Treatment at Keelan Eyecare
Conjunctivitis, better known as pink eye, can prove extraordinarily uncomfortable, potentially harmful to the cornea of the eye, and is, in some cases, highly contagious. If you need pink eye treatment for yourself or any member of your Brick Township family, you can get that treatment here at Keelan Eyecare. Either optometrist at our office will be happy to discover the cause of your symptoms and prescribe the right combination of soothing remedies.
Understanding Pink Eye
Conjunctivitis is an irritation and/or infection of the conjunctiva, a membrane that covers the white of the eye. This membrane is normally clear and uncolored, but the inflammation causes it to take on a pinkish tinge. Other common pink eye symptoms include:
- Increased sensitivity to light
- Blurring of vision
- Eye pain or itching
- A watery or thick discharge from the eye
- Swelling of the eyelid and other tissues surrounding the eye
Conjunctivitis can be caused by a number of problems. For many people, seasonal or year-round allergies can cause pink eye symptoms. Allergic conjunctivitis typically affects both eyes instead of just one. Viral infections, including infection by the shingles virus or other members of the herpes family, can cause conjunctivitis. Children in particular are regularly exposed to bacteria which can spread from child to child, resulting in bacterial conjunctivitis. Contact lenses or eye makeup may also cause infection. Bacterial conjunctivitis can often be identified by the relatively thick discharge it produces.
Soothing Care from Dr. Martha Nguyen-Keelan and Dr. Patrick Keelan
Pink eye needs to be diagnosed and treated sooner rather than later. Although the viral and bacterial forms usually recede once the underlying infection runs its course, allergic conjunctivitis may cause recurring or constant symptoms. Even worse, a serious case of pink eye can make the cornea vulnerable to ulceration and scarring. Our eye doctors, Dr. Martha Nguyen-Keelan and Dr. Patrick Keelan, can come to the rescue by examining your eyes, confirming conjunctivitis, and figuring out why you're suffering from this problem. We can then provide:
- Warm compresses (and instructions for home application)
- Artificial tears or lubricating eye drops
- Antiviral or antibacterial drugs
- Antihistamines or other anti-allergy medications for allergic conjunctivitis
- Suggestions for improving contact lens or eye makeup hygiene
